Work category 131 provides for approved organisations to share the costs associated with the maintenance and renewal of rail level crossing warning devices carried out by the relevant rail track authority.

Qualifying activities

The maintenance and renewal of barrier arms and warning devices are covered under this work category.

Qualifying activities are activities planned and programmed by the relevant rail track authority and communicated to affected approved organisations and the Transport Agency (state highways) to enable them to incorporate the activities in their local road and state highway maintenance programmes for the next National Land Transport Programme (NLTP).

Where the relevant rail track authority responds to unplanned events, or to rail level crossing deterioration occurring ahead of schedule, the costs of these activities also qualify for funding from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF).

Funding assistance rates

The Transport Agency expects that the relevant rail track authority and the road controlling authority will share equally the costs of maintaining and renewing rail level crossing warning devices.

Where, under a deed of grant by the relevant rail track authority, the road controlling authority is required to pay the full cost of maintenance and renewal, this cost is accepted for funding assistance from the NLTF.

Conditions of funding

An invoice from the relevant rail track authority must back up claims for funding assistance.
