Project introduction

The Matakohe Bridges (known as Hardies and Anderson) located on SH12 near Matakohe are being replaced by two new two-lane bridges. The new 3km road alignment will remove the tight curves and short straights and will improve safety on this section of SH12.

  • the new alignment is 2.5km, replacing a 3km section of the old state highway and removing tight bends on the approaches to the bridges
  • a new and improved intersection for the Matakohe township and the iconic Kauri Museum
  • environmental improvements including landscaping and storm water treatment
  • cycling connections in partnership with the Kaipara District Council will be provide for the local community and visitors travelling along the Twin Coast Discovery Route (work on the cycleway is due to be completed December 2019).


The Agency has worked closely with Te Uri o Hau who have blessed and gifted the two new bridges their names in two separate Dawn Blessing ceremonies.  The longer bridge is known as Piringatahi (bringing together as one) the shorter bridge is known as Te Ao Marama Hou (moving from the past into the future).

Interesting fact

The larger of the two bridges, Piringatahi is the largest super-tee bridge in Northland.  Super-tees are precast, prestressed box girder sections with top  flanges suitable for long spans – they reduce or eliminate the framework required for the insitu deck slab.
