Purpose of this project

The intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 11 in Kawakawa is a key connector for the Twin Coast Discovery Route and a significant intersection for Far North communities.

The construction of a roundabout and new pedestrian connections will deliver improved access and connectivity for locals, visitors and regional freight.

The recently completed Twin Coast Discovery Route SH1 Kawakawa to Puketona business case identified this intersection as a priority for investment.

Construction of a retaining wall will commence in July, with roundabout construction beginning in October. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2021.

Benefits

Improving access to the Twin Coast Discovery Route will help to enhance tourism opportunities in the region. Accessibility to and from services in and around the Kawakawa town centre will be improved through managed traffic flows and better pedestrian and cycle access at the intersection, which will benefit both local communities, businesses and visitors alike.

Improved access to the Twin Coast Discovery Route will enhance tourism opportunities as well as regional freight movements by improving safety and journey time reliability, particularly at peak seasonal times.

Construction and procurement for the project will occur via the Northland Delivery Framework (NDF), meaning that local contractors benefit from job creation during construction. The NDF panel also provides opportunities for graduate programmes and work experience for Northland youth.

Indicative project timeframes

  • May 2020: award construction contract
  • July 2020: commence construction on the retaining wall
  • October 2020: commence construction of roundabout
  • June 2021: project completion.

Please note that project timeframes are indicative and subject to change as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.
