We want to make your roads safer for everyone who uses them. Shoulders have been widened and safety barriers have been installed along SH11, but there is something more we can do to prevent people from dying or being seriously injured – reduce speed limits so they are safe and right for the road.
To help us fully understand the issues on this road we have asked the community to give us their views on speed on this road.
During July 2019, we asked the public for feedback on current and proposed speed limits on SH11 between Puketona and Haruru Falls. We read all the feedback and used these insights along with our technical analysis of what is the safe and appropriate speed for this road.
The community feedback indicated that people felt the road between Haruru and Paihia should also have a speed review, as people felt this area is unsafe. We included this area within our formal consultation of proposed speed limits on this road, and we undertook formal consultation in November and December 2019.
Consultation has now closed and we thank everyone who provided feedback. A decision on the safe and appropriate speeds will be published on our website in due course.

What we know
The majority of people felt lower speeds were justified between Puketona and Paihia.
People supported a lower speed in Haruru Falls village and felt this should be extended to include Watea due to the development happening here. The area of Haruru is growing. It’s getting harder to turn in and out of the township. There are more people cycling, both on the road and on the shared path.
There have been 102 crashes on this stretch of road in the last 10 years (2009 - 2018) resulting in two people being killed, 14 seriously injured.
There will be an extra 12 seconds added to the current travel time between Puketona and Paihia if the proposed speeds are put in place.
