Making the road safer

State Highway 1 (SH1) is the main road into Christchurch and is an important link for people driving to work, local businesses and freight. This road is becoming busier as more people make Waimakariri district their home. Unfortunately, some intersections, the speed people travel at and the many accesses combined with high traffic volumes mean it’s unsafe for travellers.

Eight people died and 41 were seriously injured on this stretch of road between 2008 and 2017. Most deaths on the road were from head-on crashes.

What we are doing

We have been working on a plan to make this road safer. We had some great conversations with communities, Waimarkariri District Council and groups such as AA and the Heavy Haulage Association. We now have some ideas for improving the road and we have recently consulted with the local community and key stakeholders. Consultation closed on 6 September and we are now working through all the feedback and ideas we received. We’ll update you again in the coming months.

Safer speeds

People told us that speed limits on SH1 between Waikuku and Lineside Road feel too high to be safe. We’ve reviewed them and have proposed new limits. Consultation on speeds has now closed. We will update the community on our decisions in the near future.
