Project introduction

The NZ Transport Agency is seeking public input into proposals to set permanent new speed limits on State Highway 1 in Glenavy, South Canterbury and Waitaki Bridge, North Otago.

  • Project type

    Speed review

Background

We want to make your roads safer for everyone who uses them. On some roads we’re doing this with safety improvements but on State Highway 1 in Glenavy (South Canterbury) and Waitaki Bridge village (North Otago), the best thing we can do to prevent people from dying or being seriously injured is reduce speed limits, so they are safe and right for this part of the road.

Before we make a decision we want to hear from you.

What we know

We’ve talked to the community, council, local businesses and others about making the highway in Glenavy and Waitaki Bridge safer. We’ve heard that speeds in this area feel too high to be safe.

There have been 26 crashes on this stretch of road in the last ten years (2009–2018). One person has died, three seriously injured, and another 16 people have received minor injuries.

Glenavy is a stopping location for tourists and has regular pedestrian activity. South of Glenavy, including the Waitaki Bridge through to south of Jackson Road on the south side of Waitaki Bridge settlement, there are numerous driveways and intersections, there is also the weighbridge and poor sight visibility at the river access intersection.

What we’re proposing

Location Current speed limit Proposed speed limit Current mean operating speeds
Existing 70km/h area, from 120m north of White Street to 240m south of Redcliff Road - 0.6km  70km/h  60km/h  65-69 km/h
It is safer and more appropriate for this residential area with its many driveways and intersections to have a speed limit of 60km/h.
South of Glenavy from 240m south of Redcliff Road to 330m south of Jackson Road. 100km/h  80km/h  85-89 km/h

A speed limit of 80km/h across the Waitaki Bridge and through the Waitaki Bridge village is recommended as the bridge has a narrow shoulder and in the village there is residential development, driveways and side road intersections.
