New Otaika Bridge

This video shows how the west side of the new Otaika Bridge was built. Traffic has been moved onto the new section as the team now begins to build the east side.

Stage 1: Bridge works - January 2019

The SH1/Tarewa Road Intersection Upgrade is the last of six projects within the Whangārei Improvements package to improve the state highway through Whangārei by easing bottlenecks and congestion and improving traffic flow and safety.

Construction on SH1/Tarewa Road Intersection Upgrade is planned to start mid-September 2018 with completion planned for mid-2020.

Key features

  • Improved safety for those walking and cycling to and from the Whangārei Hospital, Northland Polytechnic and the CBD with a shared path under the new bridge and signalised pedestrian crossings.
  • Traffic lights at the intersection to make it more efficient and safer to turn right into Tarewa Road improving safety for all road users.
  • Double lanes for north and south bound traffic (including replacing the existing bridge, installation of new free left turns on/off SH1 and banning the right turn out of Tarewa Road, to offset any delay due to the new traffic lights.

Bylaw consultation

Under section 61(3) of the Government Roading Powers Act 1989 and section 22AD of the Land Transport Act 1998, the NZ Transport Agency proposed to amend the Traffic Controls on State Highways Bylaw 2017. The proposed bylaw amendment intended to prohibit a vehicle turning to the right from Tarewa Road into State Highway 1 at the intersection of these two roads in Whangārei. Submissions closed 5pm, Friday 26 April 2019.
