Project introduction

The NZ Transport Agency sought public input into proposals to set permanent new speed limits along State Highway 2 between Katikati and Tauranga.

Project updates

Background

There’s been a high number of crashes on State Highway 2 (SH2) between Katikati and Tauranga. We want to make sure that speeds are safe and right for this road, so we’re proposing speed limit changes.

We’re also making SH2 between Waihī and Ōmokoroa safer by improving intersections and installing roadside safety barriers, widening the road shoulder and putting in a wide centreline. Work is already underway on these improvements and, along with the right speed limit, will make SH2 safer for everyone.

Before we make a decision, we want to hear from you.

What we know

Between 2009 and 2018, 27 people died, and 77 people were seriously injured in crashes on this stretch of road.

There are more vehicles, including heavy vehicles, using this section of SH2 and it’s catering to a wide range of competing travel needs, with 43 intersections and over 100 driveways that have direct access onto the road.

Lowering the speed limit is something we can do now to help make SH2 safer in the short to medium term while we investigate other potential safety improvements between Ōmokoroa and Tauranga.

We’re also making SH2 between Waihī and Ōmokoroa safer by improving intersections and installing roadside safety barriers, widening the road shoulder and putting in a wide centreline. Work is already underway, along with the right speed limit, this will make SH2 safer for everyone.

More information about these improvements can be found on the SH2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa project site.
