The Waitara to Bell Block section of SH3 is one of the busiest roads in the region. It carries a combination of commuter, tourist and long-haul freight traffic and provides access to key destinations such as New Plymouth Airport and the Port. Future development in Waitara and Bell Block will increase traffic on this road, increasing the risk of crashes.
There have been 101 crashes on this route between 2009 and 2018. Seven people died and 14 people were seriously injured.
Making sure the speed limit is right is one of the best ways to make this road safer so we’re proposing to make the speed limit a consistent 80km/h along the route.
Physical works to make the road safer got underway in February this year and towards the end of 2020 we’ll start making significant changes to the road with roundabouts at key intersections, safety barriers and other safety improvements.
These safety improvements along with a consistent safe speed on the route, will help prevent people being killed or seriously injured in crashes.
If we change the speed limit to a consistent 80km/h, it will only add about 18 seconds to the journey along the entire route.
What we’re proposing
We’re proposing the following changes to speed limits on this road:
||Current speed limit
||Proposed new speed limit
||Mean operating speed
|Mahoetahi Rd intersection to Waitara
From the existing 80/100km/h speed limit change point, located 360m north-east of the Mahoetahi Road/SH3 intersection to the existing 80/100km/h speed limit change point located 400m south-west of the Princess Street/SH3 intersection. A length of 4.3km.
|Waitara to Bayly St intersection
From the existing 80/100km/h speed limit change point, located 430m north-east of the Princess Street/SH3 intersection to 300m east of the Bayley Street/SH3 intersection. A length of 0.9km.
