What we know

We’ve talked to the community and others about making this stretch of road safer. People have told us speeds through Waiotapu feel too high to be safe.

There are several businesses and intersections leading to tourist destinations at Waiotapu. Vehicles are slowing down to turn off to these locations, while those passing through are continuing to travel at 100km/h which causes safety issues. There is also limited space for traffic to turn and the current road layout makes it hard for drivers to see what’s ahead. Reducing the speed limit is a relatively simple way to make this area safer for everyone.

Between 2009 and 2018 there were 20 crashes at Waiotapu resulting in five people being seriously injured.

We are also making SH5 between Warakei and SH38 safer with improvements such as roadside safety barriers, rumble strips and wide centrelines. Work is already underway on the northern section, which includes Waiotapu. The right speed limit, along with these other improvements will make Waiotapu safer for everyone.
