Project introduction

Auckland Airport and the surrounding areas are a gateway to Auckland and New Zealand. They are also an employment and freight hub and home to many vibrant communities. To support growth in this area we are working together to give people more travel choices.

About this programme

The Southwest Gateway is a programme of three key transport projects to create a well-connected, efficient transport system that will provide choice and reliability for how people and freight travel around the southwest and southeast Auckland, including to and from the airport.

We need to move more people more efficiently by providing better public transport and walking and cycling facilities, improving safety and boosting the efficiency of freight. This will improve access to jobs, education and social opportunities, support economic prosperity and provide health, cultural and environmental benefits.

In November 2017 work was completed on a programme business case [PDF, 85 MB], which outlines a high-level programme for improving airport access. The Southwest Gateway programme is an outcome of this work.

Following the programme business case, the Transport Agency, Auckland Transport and Auckland Airport identified three projects to progress:

  • Airport to Botany Rapid Transit(external link) - will deliver a frequent rapid transit system between the airport, Manukau and Botany (led by Auckland Transport).
  • 20Connect - will improve journey reliability along State Highway 20, 20A and 20B and provide more choice when travelling around southwest Auckland, including to and from the airport (led by the Transport Agency).
  • Auckland Airport Precinct Improvements(external link) - the airport area will undergo a dramatic transformation over the next 30 years with a combined international and domestic terminal, new airfield infrastructure, second runway and upgraded departures and arrivals areas as well as upgrades to public transport, roading and walking infrastructure within the airport precinct (led by Auckland Airport).

The programme will be delivered in stages over the next 20 years with the early improvements expected to start late 2019.

Preparing for the future

Population and job growth in the southeast and southwest of Auckland need a transport system that evolves to match. Auckland Airport, Manukau and their surrounds are forecast for continuing job growth, while Botany/ Howick and Manurewa/ Drury will have more residents.

Current services do not meet people’s needs, limiting access, choice and the uptake of public transport.

The Southwest Gateway will better connect these hubs with a rapid transit system and a quality transport interchange at Puhinui Station.
