Our regulatory strategy, ‘Tū ake, tū māia, Stand up, stand firm’ sets the path we need to take over the next five years to be the best regulator we can be. It articulates our new way of working as a ‘real-world regulator’, which is to be firm and fair in applying the principles of good regulatory practice while being grounded in te ao Māori.

It means working with people, so they understand the rules and how to be safe, taking action when we need to, and basing our decisions on the best data, insights and evidence. It’s all about reducing risk and preventing harm.

As the lead regulator for land transport in New Zealand, our purpose is to ensure the land transport system is safe, effective, efficient and functions well for everyone in New Zealand.

Tū ake, tū māia outlines five key capability shifts that will support the delivery of our regulatory role over the next five years. These shifts bring a focus to good regulatory practice so that we can target our efforts in the areas where we think we can have the greatest impact.
