Federal Street walking and cycling improvements (Auckland)

Auckland Transport trialled a contra-flow cycle lane and test street layout ideas before Federal Street’s scheduled permanent upgrade.

Wharf Street dining precinct (Tauranga)

Tauranga Downtown Mainstreet (TDM) and Wharf Street businesses initiated a 12-month trial to convert Wharf Street into an outdoor dining precinct, funded by business and property owners, TDM, and corporate sponsors, together with contributions from TCC.

Traffic cones for school roads (New Plymouth)

NPDC conducted a six-month trial of a process where schools could safely place No Stopping Cones in agreed priority areas in the road reserve at peak times, with RCA endorsement.

Maple Lane planter trial (Palmerston North)

Palmerston North City Council ran a trial to close Maple Lane from through vehicle traffic on a Monday in May 2019.

Lower Tory Street activation (Wellington)

WCC trialled a three-month space reallocation and activation of Lower Tory St in 2018. It was intended to test ideas and see how well the space was used before committing to full investment, as well as to promote community conversations around the future of the area.

Central city schools cluster project (Dunedin)

Dunedin City Council surveyed key stakeholders to investigate the existing traffic safety problems and what would be needed to encourage more pupils to use other modes than cars. Several treatments were designed to concept stage and consulted on with key stakeholders and the general public, then trial versions installed over a one-month period.

Gap Filler placemaking (Christchurch)

Gap Filler Trust formed after the first earthquake in 2010 and began hosting placemaking events and activations in vacant lots around Christchurch. Gap Filler has led over 100 space activations since its founding and facilitated many others.

John McGlashan College one-way trial (Dunedin)

Pilkington Street was a two-way street running through the John McGlashan College campus.

Dunedin Railway Station road closure

Dunedin City Council trialled closing the thoroughfare in front of Dunedin Railway Station for four days over a weekend in January 2018, and again for two weeks in late February/March 2019.

Painted roundabout trials (Dunedin)

DCC installed trial roundabouts at 11 unsignalised intersections to test roundabout sizes and layouts. As well as enabling a smaller layout than usually designed for permanent changes, the trial format meant small changes on-site could easily be carried out.
