Safety performance reports

Each year licence holders are required to provide the Transport Agency with a Safety Performance Report

Safety Performance Reports are an opportunity for licence holders to describe how they have managed safety over the previous 12-month period and what initiatives they are taking to ensure continuous improvement.

The Transport Agency uses the data to better understand the performance of individual licencees and to create a database of overall safety performance. This informs our understanding of risk and helps identify good practice.

The report goes beyond what is covered in annual ordinary safety assessments (which pick up non-compliances) and occurrence reporting, which reports on system failures.

The Safety Performance Report will contain:

  • A description and analysis of the safety performance of each licence holder’s railway activities
  • Comments on any issues identified that may be relevant to rail safety
  • Descriptions of any safety initiatives undertaken during the reporting period or proposed to be undertaken in the next or future reporting periods
  • The outcomes of safety case and safety system review(s) conducted during the reporting period.
