Lighting columns represent a significant roadside hazard. To mitigate the risks associated with these necessary roadside objects, the NZ Transport Agency has developed the following technical advice in consultation with industry in relation to the selection installation and maintenance of passively safe (or frangible) lighting columns. All lighting column systems must be accepted by the Transport Agency for use on state highways.

The following technical information is available:

Installation and maintenance of M19 3-bolt shear base lighting columns (TM2007) December 2011

Technical memorandum TM2007: installation and maintenance of M19 3-bolt shear base lighting columns, provides advice on the recommended practice for installation and maintenance of M19 3-bolt shear base lighting columns to ensure safe operation.

For further information on road lighting columns accepted for installation on the state highway network, please refer to Specification M26.
